Meeting The Iconic Antonio Marras in Sardinia

When I was invited to the MusaMadre Festival 2023 in Sardinia, I was beyond excited. Sardinia has been on my ‘must see’ list for a long time. Plus it would be the 18th region in Italy that I’ve explored.

My good friend Roberta Corradin was launching her latest novel ‘Cannoli Siciliani’ in Sardinia and was presenting at MusaMadre as well.

Upon arriving at the abandoned Sardinian village of Rebeccu, where the Festival was held, everything seemed primitive from the outside. But Valeria Orani, a New Yorker and Sardinian native and the festival organizer explained her vision of resurrecting Rebeccu as a center for artists and creativities. When she gave me a tour I was taken by the beauty of the clothes and interior deco inside the book shop. She explained everything was the creative work of Antonio Marras. The handmade baskets were traditional and made by locals and used for making pasta. Antonio had re-designed all with beautiful fabrics. Each a work of art built by him using the fabrics from his latest collection.

Antonio had been the creative head for Kenzo for years. A native Sardinian, his own brand AntonioMarras is a fashion expression. As a former fashion professional, I always know the best way to understand a designer’s philosophy and talent is to see and touch their work. Roberta offered to drive me to Alghero to visit his flagship store.

I was completely mesmerized by the quality and texture of the elegant fabrics he used. I haven’t seen many designer products with such intricate details and meticulous craftsmanship for a long while. I do believe true design takes vision, talent, patience, passion and strong love. Every piece of his design speaks his sincerity. I immediately appreciated and understood his designs for MusaMadre.

My friends and I visited one village where a young local art preservationist Andrea Pais showed us some of the traditional Sardinian clothing he had collected. Seeing these pieces helped me to understand the aesthetic and the pride of Sardinian artistic traditions.

When Antonio and his wife Patrizia arrived at the Festival on Aug 5th, I greet him with an outfit I could not resist from his store. He came to me and said “ this is so you!” like we had known each other for a long time. What impressed me most was how down-to-earth and personable both him and his wife Patrizia Marras were. Patrizia sweetly said the outfit looked as if it was made for me. In fashion, we could communicate our feelings without words, but with the understanding and appreciation.

I am so grateful and feel fortunate that I was able to experience Sardinia this way. To see the proud culture of Sardinia explained in an utterly artistic way. Thank you MuseMadre Festival for expressing how Sardinians live and love their land and traditions.

一进店，我完全被他使用的精致优雅面料的品质和质感迷住了。很久没有看到过如此复杂费工的细节和严谨工艺的设计师产品了。我坚信真正的设计需要远见、才华、耐心、热情和强烈的爱。而他的每一件设计都体现了他的真诚和如今市场上为快捷而忽略细节的风气截然不同。看了他的旗舰店，我才理解并真正更进一步去欣赏他为 MusaMadre 艺术节所做的设计。

当安东尼奥和他的妻子帕特里齐亚于 8 月 5 日到达音乐节时，我穿上了从他店里买的一套我无法抗拒的衣服。他从远处看到我，直着就走过来对我说：“这实在太是你的风格了！”好似我们已经认识很久一样。给我印象最深的是他和他的妻子帕特里齐亚·马拉斯 (Patrizia Marras) 的都特别友善和亲切。帕特里夏晚饭进餐厅前，亲切地摸着我的肩膀说，这身衣服看起来就像是为你量身定做的。在时尚界，我们可以不用言语，而是通过理解和欣赏来表达我们的感受和对作品的喜爱。

我很感激也很幸运能够以这种方式体验撒丁岛。看到以完全艺术的方式解释撒丁岛引以为傲的文化。感谢 MuseMadre 艺术节表达了撒丁岛人如何生活以及热爱他们的土地和传统。
